Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford began performing in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not right for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her debut on television in an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
